Nowadays, the modern world is witnessing many problems: global warming, greenhouse effects, overpopulation, and so on. Aging is one of the world’s problems and achievements at the same time.
According to its definition, aging is a phenomenon when the ratio of older people in society or around the whole Earth increases. However, some people may say that the process of aging has ambiguous consequences. On the one hand, aging means the rise of the life expectancy, progress in the economy, improvement of the average well-being standards, and promotion of a healthy lifestyle. On the other hand, the term “aging” may be associated with such words as “disability”, “dependence”, and “illnesses” (National Institute of Aging, 2011, p.1). Another popular thesis states that the problem of aging appears because of the decreasing mortality and low fertility rate. Thus, those who were born live longer, but another new generation is produced too slowly. As a result, the process leads to the reduction in the proportion of children and logically raises the number of older people (United Nations, 2013, p.14).
It is a well-known fact that the older people are, the more difficulties they have to overcome in their life. Poverty, ageism, and abuse are three the most widespread community issues affecting the elderly population today. All these problems exist, and the government of the country as well as people responsible for gerontological nursing should not turn a blind eye to these hazards but strive to apply the wide range of different techniques to save the old.
Thus, in order to support ageing people, gerontological nursing has been applied to the older generation. In other words, gerontological nursing is applied in the form of an intensive interaction between the patient and nurse aimed at achieving good health and wellbeing results. It goes without saying that in such kind of interaction, the role of a patient is never less valuable than the role of a nurse. In the process of healing, patients make use of their personal experiences and knowledge about themselves. At the same time, nurses widely use their knowledge of gerontology and geriatrics, their professionalism as well as the art of healing. Moreover, the historical, social, political, and cultural changes contribute greatly to this kind of interaction and affect it in various ways (Canadian Gerontological Nursing Association, 2010, p. 7-8).

According to the 2010 national census, an estimated 524 million people were aged 65 or older making 8 percent of the world’s population. Scientists believe that this figure will triple in the following 30 years. Thus, by the end of 2050, the number of older people will reach 1.5 billion, which makes up approximately 16 percent of the Earth’s population. It is an interesting fact that the proportion of older people increases more rapidly in the developing countries than in the developed ones. Statistics shows that between 2010 and 2050, the ratio of older generation in poorer countries has a tendency to increase to more than 250 percent. To compare with, the proportion of old people in the developed countries is going to increase only to 71 percent (National Institute of Aging, 2011, p.7).
In the plan list of Healthy People 2020, several goals intended for the improvement of people’s general health characteristics have been mentioned. Among them is the elimination of preventable disease, disability and injury. Another aim is to invent social and physical environments that will insure good health for all its members. Promotion of people’s interest towards their health and the encouragement of healthy behaviors are the key elements in this strategy (Developing healthy people 2020, 2008, p. 6). However, in order to achieve better results in the improvement of human health, a great number of changes in other spheres of life should be also taken into account. Today, an alarming problem is the polluted environment. Thus, people should not only think about their health and wellbeing, but take care about the nature as well.
